What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?


Unlike older keys, modern car keys are equipped with specific chips inside that are specific to each vehicle. This prevents thieves from simply taking the key and turning on the car.

The keys can be purchased from a dealership or cloned in the locksmith's shop. The manufacturer's process varies, but it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position, without beginning the car, and then removing the key within a specified time period.

Transponder Codes

The name implies that transponders transmit an encoded signal with the four-digit code when it is interrogated by air traffic control. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code, is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit a specific message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to notify controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are vital to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar interrogation by identifying a code. This allows ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens.
